Cauterets
Cauterets is a small town at the entrance to the Pyrenees National Park.
Cauterets is an historical Pyrenean spa town which, like its more famous neighbour Lourdes, found fame for healing powers of the local waters. Cauterets is great value for money and there is a good choice of restaurants and bars, although its not a real party town.

There are 36km of pistes which are accessed by gondola from the town.

Whilst the downhill skiing and snowboarding is fairly limited Cauterets is a mecca for cross country skiers and the routes are spectacular. The cross country ski-ing, snow shoeing and tobogganing area is a 7km drive away in a separate area in the National Park.

It is close to Pau and Lourdes airport and a reasonable drive from Toulouse (find flights) and this makes it good as a weekend venue, and car hire is recommended. This allows other nearby resorts to be visited as well.

Cervinia Cervinia is situated below the Matterhorn, and has a long season given its high altitude and nearby glacier. It also gives access to the slopes of Zermatt, although exploring far into that resort can be difficult given its geography, and the constant threat of the lifts over the top being closed forcing an expensive overnight stay in Switzerland. Cervinia has great cruising, its on the sunny side of the Alps, and although the resort cannot be termed as pretty it does suit budget conscious skiers and boarders who like travelling high miles - from the top of the resort to the foot at Valtourniche is a drop of almost 2000m and a distance of around 13km! Chamonix
Chamonix has some of the world best skiing and snowboarding spread over six different mountains.
The valley cuts through Europe’s highest mountains and glaciers making it a leading challenge for expert and adventurous skiers.

The actual town is large with several villages along the valley nearby - it also has a good mountaineering history if you fancy a change from skiing.

Champagny
Champagny is a beautiful village and although it has grown significantly over the past few years it has done so in a way that its still blends sympathetically with its surroundings.
Not ideal for beginners or nervous intermediates as the slopes into the village are tricky, but for more accomplished skiers its is a good base, especially if you have transport, as it opens up the possibility of ski away days to Courchevel and the Three Valleys.

Just 8 minutes by cable car from the main slopes of La Plagne, and only 20 minutes from its heart, Champagny is an excellent 'back door' route to the domain.

Its great advantage though is that as it has been largely ignored by the major tour operators, Champagny it is noticeably quieter and more pleasant place to ski or board, particularly during busy peak periods.

Off the slopes there are a few restaurants, the most popular being Le Rochers. Go for the Plat de Jour for great local fare at really good prices. The Poya is cosy and situated by the main square whilst the Alpina is the resorts up market option.

Champery Champery is a great way to access the Portes du Soleil, whilst staying in a fantastic location. Its in Switzerland but very close to the French border. Champery is better for intermediates than beginners as the learner slopes are on the steep side. Access from the village, which is fairly sizable (when booking ski hire check where your accommodation is to use the best located shop), can mean a bit of a walk to the cable car up to the slopes, but other than that expect a trouble free holiday in the Swiss Alps. Chatel
Chatel is an attractive, if somewhat extended village in the Portes du Soleil circuit, that attracts a predominantly French clientele.
Somewhat surprising really given its one of the closer resorts to the UK, and is an easy couple of hours from Geneva (which can mean roads are very busy at peak periods).

It is somewhere where an attempt to speak French will go down well with the locals!

There is good availability of standard to moderate accommodation throughout the village. The low altitude of the resort and surrounding mountains gets mixed reviews, with some saying it can be a real damper on proceedings (quite literally if it rains!) although other say this this reputation is very overstated.

Combloux
Combloux is a great value alternative to staying in Megeve – although slower access to the main slopes is the penalty to be paid for the lower prices!
It has some great accommodation, much chalet based and for those with a car to get around it is a very attractive place to stay. The slopes are tree lined and with three mountains to attack there is plenty to keep even mileage hungry skiers satisfied.

Corvara is situated right on the Sella Ronda, which can mean that at peak times the main lifts get busy – but it also gives access to local the more gentle local slopes over to San Cassiano.
Its an ideal base for those early in their skiing career, and is great for families. The village is a lively bustling place under the imposing rock face of the Gruppo Sella.

Courchevel 1300
Courchevel 1300 (otherwise known by its former name Le Praz)is an old farming village.
It expanded for 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics (it was the site of the ski jump events) and although the development didn't blend into the landscape as perhaps it could have done its still a really pleasant place to stay.

A road winds up from this village to the others. You can ski down to the village but there are only red and black runs down, so we recommend only confident skiers to attempt this, others can get the gondola down the mountain.

Courchevel 1550
Courchevel 1550 is the 'original Courchevel', the resort is situated alongside the bottom of the ski slopes with lifts literally just above the accommodation.
There are both blue and red slopes down into Courchevel 1550. This town is not as expensive as Courchevel 1850 but there can be some high prices so be warned!
More Info
Courchevel 1650
Courchevel 1650 was formerly known as Moriond and has expanded up the road leading to Courchevel 1850.
The connections for skiers between Courchevel 1650 and 1850 are becoming increasingly well linked. Whilst prices are higher generally than those resorts further down the mountain you can still find places to stay in and eat that that are reasonably priced.

More Info
Courchevel 1850
Courchevel 1850 is the most up-market out of the four towns making up the Courchevel resort.
1850 is the biggest and brashest without any doubt and is the main lift base which is right in the centre of the resort.

Visitors do not make Courchevel 1850 their destination of choice for its village charm - more its up market reputation as 'the' ski resort to be seen in, proving that your are a person of considerable substance to be able to make it your ski or boarding holiday destination.

Crans-Montana
Crans Montana is a great resort to access for non drivers due to the funicular railway that runs up from the train station in Sierre.
It is however a spread out place (really the two towns of Crans and Montana that have grown together) so if booking ski hire do check the location of the shop and ensure you are close to your preferred lift station or your accommodation.

There are fantastic views from the large and impressive ski area and this is a good resort for mixed ability groups (although really accomplished experts might find the challenges a little tame).
