Val Cenis Lanslebourg
Lanselbourg is one of two resorts making up Val Cenis.
They have lifts linking the resorts and also have their own routes up the mountain. They then form an area of 125km of pistes of mainly intermediate slopes. The resort has the longest green run in Europe from the top of the mountain to the bottom - 13km long - which is reminiscent of the Canadian trait of providing a easy route down for early stagers. It does not get a lot of UK visitors, with the vast majority of skiers and boarders coming from France - partly as it is a just a bit further afield than most ski areas.

Val Thorens
The slopes of Val Thorens offer challenges for everyone and are suitable beginners, experts and every shade in between.
The village is one of the highest in Europe making it good for early and late season trips.

Its a lively resort, normally cheaper than other resorts nearby, but as a place to stay less visually attractive than Meribel or St Martin. However that doesn't put the seasoned skiers and boarders who throng Val Thorens attracted by its reliable snow and great apres ski.

Valfrejus
Valfrejus is a small resort in the Maurienne Valley.
It shares a lift pass with a number of other resorts including Val Cenis, but a car is really essential if your plan is to make the most of your visit. Built in the 80's Valfrejus offers a good standard of accommodation, and the apres ski is better developed than in many resorts in the area.

Valloire
Valloire is part of the piste area known as Valloire Galbier, which cover both Valloire and nearby Valmeinier.
With around 150km of slopes on offer the resorts present a sizable piste area, but mainly due to their fairly remote location are a quiet alternative to the more fashionable resorts. the skiing really suits intermediates who prefer cruising to challenge.

Valloire itself is a cul-de-sac during the winter when the pass further up the valley is closed by snow and it makes it a quiet welcoming place.

Valmeinier
Valmeinier is a resort of two parts - the traditional centre, and the modern slopeside resort up the mountain.
Together with Valloire in the next valley it makes up the domaine of Galibier Thorber, the most significant ski area in the Maurienne Valley.

It's a good domain for intermediates who want to cruise relatively modest slopes and prefer a more 'French' experience to the mega resorts.

Valmorel
Valmorel is a modern resort but has been constructed with falling back on stark tower blocks some its predecessors harbour.
It is well designed with pistes finishing in the centre of the village, a pretty pedestrainised place with a real centre to it.

The slopes best suit beginners and intermediates but the slopes of the Tignes, Val d'Isere, Les Arcs and La Plagne are all within striking distance for those seeking a challenge.

Vars Vars shares is pretty extensive slopes with its near neighbour Risoul. Whilst most people stay in the mountain side purpose built accommodation there is the alternative of the older traditional mountain village of Vars itself. The skiing is good for skiers of all standards but the lift system is still too heavily reliant on drags and slower lifts. More Info
Vaujany Vaujany was once a farming village, but has now transformed its self into a commuter village into the Alpe-d'Huez ski area. It still has the heart of the village it once was but the trappings of a modern resort are steadily taking over. The ski area suits all standards, although its a pity you cannot, unless pretty experienced return to the village on skis - There is a black which ends up below the village with a small lift to return you home. Verbier Verbier is one of the largest Swiss ski resorts and is rightly renowned around the world for its off piste. It also has a lively apres ski scene, and attracts top skiers from around the world. The skiing on piste is less accommodating for less accomplished skiers and boarders - the slopes are tricky to move around and can get pretty busy in places. Its also not a cheap place to stay - but the nightlife is the stuff legends are made of. More Info
